Abstract

Atopic dermatitis is a skin disease condition characterized by itchy skin, peeling and inflammation. The pathogenesis of the disease is complex, involving damage to the skin barrier and an imbalance in the immune system with increased Th2, Th17 and Th22 signaling. Treatment for this condition varies depending on the severity of the disease, but topical medications are often prescribed. Atopic medications have advantages and disadvantages, so optimization of drug delivery systems through transdermal systems or TDDS is needed. The approach of TDDS is that the therapeutic agent immersed in the patch will be released and then absorbed by the tissue. The secreted drug will enter the local peripheral tissue or bloodstream directly through the diffusion process. One of the substances that can be incorporated into this patch is asiatic acid derived from Centella asiatica extract which has potential as a therapeutic agent for atopic dermatitis because it targets the JAK-STAT pathway of inflammatory signaling in cells. By applying asiatic acid to hydrogel patches with TDDS system, it is expected that the treatment of atopic dermatitis can be more effective and optimized compared to topical treatment.
